10. rāmo nāma babhūva*

सम्भाषण-श्लोक / मुक्तक

रामो नाम बभूव हुं तदबला
सीतेति
हुं तौ पितुः
वाचा पञ्चवटीवने निवसतः
तामाहरत् रावणः ।

कृष्णेनेति पुरातनिं निजकथाम्
आकर्ण्यमात्रेरितां
सौमित्रे क्व धनुर्धनुर्धनुरिति
प्रोक्ता गिरः पान्तु वः ॥

sambhāṣaṇa-śloka / muktaka

rāmo nāma babhūva huṃ tadabalā – sīteti huṃ tau pituḥ
vācā pañcavaṭīvane nivasataḥ – tāmāharat rāvaṇaḥ ।
kṛṣṇeneti purātaniṃ nijakathām – ākarṇyamātreritāṃ
saumitre kva dhanurdhanurdhanuriti – proktā giraḥ pāntu vaḥ ॥

Hint: If you remember ākāśavāṇi (All India Radio – AIR) saṃskṛta pāṭhaṃ signature tune [keyūrāṇi na bhūṣayanti puruṣaṃ], then it is easy to learn this śloka. Look here.

Background: Yaśoda mā is narrating a bed-time story to the little srī kṛṣṇa to put him to sleep. srī kṛṣṇa in his half-sleep state listens to the story and seems to have forgot his current avatār and tries to get up and pick up his bow to save Sīta (from his previous avatār .

यशोदा (yaśodā) :- रामः नाम बभूव (rāmaḥ nāma babhūva) = There was a person Rāma
श्रीकृष्ण (śrīkṛṣṇa) :- हुं (huṃ) = non / hmmm
यशोदा (yaśodā) :– तत्-अबला सीता इति (tat-abalā sītā iti) = His wife was Sīta
तौ (tau) = both
पितुः वाचा (pituḥ vācā) = as per father’s instruction
पञ्चवटीने निवसतः (pañcavaṭīne nivasataḥ) = staying in the forest of five trees
रावण: ताम् आहरत् (rāvaṇa: tām āharat) = Rrāvaṇa kidnapped her
Author: कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) = by Kṛṣṇa
इति (iti) = thus
पुरातनीं निजकथाम् (purātanīṃ nijakathām) = one’s own ancient story
मात्रा ईरिताम् (mātrā īritām) = told by mother
आकर्ण्य (ākarṇya) = listening
श्रीकृष्ण (śrīkṛṣṇa) :- सौमित्रे क्व धनुः धनुः धनुः (saumitre kva dhanuḥ dhanuḥ dhanuḥ) = Lakshmana, where is my bow, my bow, my bow?
इति प्रोक्ताः गिरः (iti proktāḥ giraḥ) = this speech / these words
वः पान्तु (vaḥ pāntu) = may protect you all.
