पापान्निवारयति योजयते हिताय
गुह्यं निगूहयति गुणान् प्रकटीकरोति ।
आपद्गतं च न जहाति ददाति काले
सन्मित्रलक्षणमिदं प्रवदन्ति सन्तः ॥
pāpānnivārayati yojayate hitāya
guhyaṃ nigūhayati guṇān prakaṭīkaroti ।
āpadgataṃ ca na jahāti dadāti kāle
sanmitralakṣaṇamidaṃ pravadanti santaḥ ॥
पापान् निवारयति (pāpān nivārayati) = removes (your) evils / demerits
हिताय योजयते (hitāya yojayate) = unites (you) with benefit / merits
गुह्यं निगूहयति (guhyaṃ nigūhayati) = hides (your) secrets
गुणान् प्रकटीकरोति (guṇān prakaṭīkaroti) = highlights (your) qualities / talents
आपद्-गतं च न जहाति (āpad-gataṃ ca na jahāti) = and does not leave when in trouble
काले ददाति (kāle dadāti) = gives / helps when needed
सन्तः प्रवदन्ति (santaḥ pravadanti) = noble people say,
इदं सन्मित्रलक्षणम् (idaṃ sanmitralakṣaṇam) = this is the mark of a good friend.
Meaning: Noble people say that the mark of a good friend is he / she removes (your) evils / demerits; unites (you) with benefit / merits; hides (your) secrets; highlights (your) qualities / talents; does not leave when in trouble and gives / helps when needed.
