आशा नाम् मनुष्याणां
काचिदाश्चर्यशृङ्खला ।
यया बद्धाः प्रधावन्ति
मुक्तास्तिष्ठन्ति पङ्गुवत् ॥
āśā nām manuṣyāṇāṃ
kācidāścaryaśṛṅkhalā ।
yayā baddhāḥ pradhāvanti
muktāstiṣṭhanti paṅguvat ॥
मनुष्याणां (manuṣyāṇāṃ) = for human beings
आशा नाम् (āśā nām) = desire is
काचित् (kācit) = some
आश्चर्य-शृङ्खला (āścarya-śṛṅkhalā) = wondrous chain / strange shackle
यया बद्धाः (yayā baddhāḥ) = those who are tied / bound by it
प्रधावन्ति (pradhāvanti) = run (keep running)
मुक्तः (muktaḥ) = those free (from it)
पङ्गुवत् तिष्ठन्ति (paṅguvat tiṣṭhanti) = sit / stay like a cripple
Meaning: Strange that, for human beings ‘desire‘ is some wondrous chain / shackle. Those who are tied / bound by it keep running and those free from it do not. They stay like a cripple.
