36. ekamevākṣaraṃ

एकमेवाक्षरं यत्तु
गुरुः शिष्यं प्रबोधयेत् ।
पृथिव्यां नास्ति तद्द्रव्यं
यद्दत्वा चानृणी भवेत् ॥

ekamevākṣaraṃ yattu
guruḥ śiṣyaṃ prabodhayet

pṛthivyāṃ nāsti taddravyaṃ
yaddatvā cānṛṇī bhavet

एकं एव अक्षरं तु (ekaṃ eva akṣaraṃ tu) = indeed that one syllable alone
यत् गुरुः शिष्यं प्रबोधयेत् (yat guruḥ śiṣyaṃ prabodhayet) = which teacher teaches a student
पृथिव्यां तत् द्रव्यं न अस्ति (pṛthivyāṃ tat dravyaṃ na asti) = there is no wealth on earth
यत् दत्वा (yat datvā) = giving which
अनृणी भवेत् (anṛṇī bhavet) = he can become free from debt.

Meaning: If a teacher has taught even one syllable to the student, there is no wealth on the earth by giving which he (student) can become free of debt.
