विद्या विवादाय धनं मदाय
शक्तिः परेषां परिपीडनाय ।
खलस्य साधोर्विपरीतमेतद्
ज्ञानाय दानाय च रक्षणाय ॥
vidyā vivādāya dhanaṃ madāya
śaktiḥ pareṣāṃ paripīḍanāya ।
khalasya sādhorviparītametad
jñānāya dānāya ca rakṣaṇāya ॥
खलस्य (khalasya) = for the wicked
विद्या (vidyā) = knowledge
विवादाय (vivādāya) =(is) for debate / dispute
धनं (dhanaṃ) = wealth
मदाय (madāya) = (is) for pride
शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) = power
परेषां परिपीडनाय (pareṣāṃ paripīḍanāya) = (is) for causing pain to others.
साधोः एतत् विपरीतम् (sadhoḥ etat viparītam) = for the noble, it is opposite.
ज्ञानाय (jñānāya) = (knowledge is) for wisdom
दानाय (dānāya) = (wealth is) for sharing / charity
च (ca) = and
रक्षणाय (rakṣaṇāya) = (power is) for protecting (others).
Hint: चतुर्थी विभक्ति (caturthī vibhakti) (Dative Case)
Meaning: A wicked person uses knowledge for debate / dispute; wealth for pride; power for causing pain to others. For a noble person, it is opposite. He uses knowledge for wisdom; wealth for sharing / charity and power for protecting (others).
Subhāṣitakāra is cautioning that we should not allow knowledge, wealth and power to corrupt us.
